Table and Chair Sets for Kids – The Best Seat in the House for Kids Activities

Table and Chair Sets for Kids - The Best Seat in the House for Kids Activities

Today I’m going to be looking at table and chair sets for kids. Kids just seem to love anything that makes them feel grown up and that’s why scaled down household items like a table and chairs made especially for children is such a great item for your home. The reason for this may be because kids naturally enjoy learning by copying adult behavior, this is why toys like workshops, kitchens and playhouses are always so popular.

If you’re going to invest in a table and chair set for kids then there are some factors that you might like to consider before making your purchase:

  1. Quality materials. It can be tempting to go for the least expensive set you can find, but this is always a false economy. You will always get what you pay for and cheap sets will generally be flimsy and poorly made, but more importantly, they may be dangerous.

Table and Chair Sets for Kids - Product Quality is King
Product quality is king when it comes down to choosing a good table and chair set for your kids. But there are other factors to consider as well…
  2. Safety. Check product reviews carefully to see if any safety concerns have been mentioned about the product. Some table and chair sets are very lightweight and fall over easily. This presents a potential hazard to your little ones as they could have a serious fall. Kids will stand on chairs even if you tell them not to a hundred or more times and for this reason, making sure that the chair is strong and stable and won’t easily break or tip over is very important. Also, ensure the materials used are nontoxic.
  3. Design. Some table and chair sets for children have great design and will look amazing in your home, while others are just plain ugly. Think carefully about where the set is going to go and if it will be in a place where it will be in view to guests you might opt for something that is more in keeping with your décor, rather than a multi colored playroom set.
  4. Ease of assembly. From the many reviews on table and chair sets for kids that I have read, one of the highest complaints was how difficult it was to put the set together. If DIY isn’t your strong suit, you may prefer to get an easy assembly set.
  5. Clean-up. A classic looking table and chair set can look beautiful in any home, but make sure it has an easy clean surface so that it is practical for your child to use. Some surfaces are not durable enough to cope with coloring pens and will stain. You can, of course, cover the table with a protective cloth to keep it looking good for longer. By the way: Giving your kids their own furniture can really help motivating them to contribute to the family by doing their share of the chores. Maybe you want to watch the following video together with them and see if they are ready to take care of their own furniture just yet…

Amazon Review Findings

Over 65% 5 star reviews. People who gave a 5 star review mention good quality and ease of assembly, plus the bonus that you can get additional chairs. Strangely there are also a lot of 1 star review saying how bad the product is, that it arrives broken with incorrect parts and is of low quality. It seems strange that two such opposite sets of reviews exist and I can only assume that at some point there was a quality control issue at the factory. The more recent reviews seem on the whole to be positive.

Conclusion

So there we have it, I would have to say that the Windsor table and chair set wins my vote hands down. Its classic design, high 5 star rating and build quality and safety make it the top table and chair set for children. If however, you like something a little more contemporary the retro table and chairs set might be more to your liking. Still boasting excellent quality, style and safety. In last place, I would put the Melissa and Doug set. The build quality seems to be rather hit or miss and it has a much lower 5 star rating and a great many more 1 star ratings than either of the other two sets. Whatever set you decide to buy, I hope your kids have years of fun using it and that this guide has helped you.

What do you think of the table and chair sets I have suggested above. Do your kids already have their own furniture? Was it worth the buy? Did I miss something or is there anything you would like to add? Please let me know in the comments below. And as always: Sharing is caring 🙂

Thanks for reading and hope you come back again soon.

  1. Yaa, out of three sets , I would choose  the first one “Windsor Table and Two Chairs”, at $101, it seems a good bet. They have such a unique and well balanced design. I am having tough time with my 2 sons, a 4 year and 6 year, I can hardly buy a set of chair that can last beyond a year, they are just too much, I think with the quality of this set, my problem is solved.

    Great thanks

  2. I remember that when me and my sister were growing up as kids we used to have this table and chair set, it was plastic and one time the leg actually broke when I sat on it. The plastic legs just wobbled and gave out. I definitely could have gotten hurt that time but I got lucky and was okay.

If I were to buy a table and chair set for kids it would be made of wood or something very strong. The Windsor set looks good, but I think I prefer the Solid Wood or Retro because I like their design better.

  3. Dear Chris,

Very helpful article on Table and Chair Sets for Kids. Thanks for your research and recommendations which saved my time.

I am going to bookmark your site because of a lot valuable information on your site and will share it with my friends.

For our child I am planning to buy Windsor Table and Two Chairs which is your top recommendation.

May I ask… The chairs don’t have the arm support or arm rest, I am bit afraid of that… May I ask your advice on that or is there any suggestions with the arm support or arm rest for the children safety. Please advice…

    Wishing much success!

  4. Hi, Thank you for your thorough analysis.
I really like the look of the Retro Table and Two Chairs Set. This might be a silly question, but as a father with a young child, I like sitting on the table and chair set with her. What is the most robust set to support parent silliness like this?
I’ve been using a robust plastic stool to join her on her table, but could consider an upgrade!
    Thanks John

  5. I have been looking for a table and chair set for my 3 year old but didn’t know where to start. Some great pointers here – and 3 really good options.

I think I like the Buschman Retro table and chairs – but I guess I should see what my kid likes the best!

    1. Hi Nathan,

Thank you so much for reading my article and leaving a comment. I’m super glad to read that I could help and at least give you some direction! Because as you said: The most important thing is that your kid will love its new table and chair set. That’s actually a great point, as allowing your kids to make their own decisions  is certainly on of the most important aspects of raising self-dependent kids these days, right?

However, what I suggest is to give your kids a limited amount of choice: For example, I like to ask my 3-year-old son on a daily basis what pants he wants to wear today. Now, if ask this open question it will take forever: He has to go through all the pants in the drawer and the sheer amount of choice is overwhelming for him. If instead I preselect 2 or 3 pants and then ask him which of those he wants to wear, he decides within seconds, but still has that strong feeling of having made a meaningful decision.

I’d do the same with table and chair sets: How about you show your daughter this article and ask her which of the three suggestions looks most appealing to her and you’ll have a decision in no time 🙂

      Thanks again,

      chris

  6. Christian,

Although my kids are quite young for table and chair sets – our set is a high chair 🙂 – I liked this article because you have explicitly specified the most important factors to consider.
For me, safety (and subsequently the materials) is the number one priority when shopping for my kids. Then its the ease-of-use and finally the Cleanup factor.
I will come back a couple of years from now to check the newest recommendations

    Marios

    1. Hey Marios, thanks a bunch for your kind comment. I’m glad to hear that you enjoyed reading my article. For dinner, Benni (he’s 3) also uses his high chair. But for any other stuff (playing games, painting, puzzling etc.) he usually uses his own kid table. I’m gonna say that when your kid starts walking (typically around his first birthday) that’s a perfect opportunity to get him his own table and chair and thus allow and encourage him to manage his own life by giving him the opportunity to decide by himself what he wants to do when he wants to do it 🙂

  7. When it comes to kids, i think everything shouldn’t be as complicated because if it is, then it wasn’t met to be for kids. i like all the things you have listed out when looking to purchase chairs and tables for the kids.

Though some parents look at fancy but not the simplicity of the product which i guess is wrong.

    Thanks for the article.

    1. Hi Angie! Thanks for your kind words. I’m glad you liked my article and enjoyed reading it. All the best to you and your loved ones, chris

  8. Chris,
Love your article on table and chair sets for kids. You are absolutely right – kids love things that make them feel like grownups!
My two girls are teenagers now but I remember the tables we had for them when they were kids. The first set we bought was a cheap plastic set. I remember thinking I don’t want to spend much money on something that is going to get trashed quickly. Boy that was not the best plan of action. The flimsy chairs quickly got busted. I then wised up and purchased something a lot steadier and of higher quality.
Personally I’m a fan of the retro table and chairs you have here. Besides the obvious high quality I love the design.
    Thanks for the great review!
    Mat A.

    1. Hey Mat! Thank you so much for your kind comment. Glad you liked my review. Yeah, the problem with buying too cheap is that you’ll most likely end up buying twice and regret your first buying decision. So going for a higher quality right away is usually key to being happy with the things you buy, especially as a parent; at least I can tell that from my experience 🙂

All the best to you and your family!

      chris
