Useful Tips For Enhancing Your Child’s Success In School

Useful Tips For Enhancing Your Child's Success In School

The ideal school experience is not about grades but rather about your child’s learning process, how they retain and use information, independent thinking, asking questions, and becoming competent.

Here are some tips that will help you enhance your child’s success at school.

Tip #1: Value Goals Over Grades

Getting good grades in school is excellent, and as parents, you feel fulfilled when your children are doing well in school. You may even overlook the fact that the constant expectation of high grades will push the children to only ace tests and exams.

But at some point, you may realize that the child cannot practically apply what they have learned because they were only interested in getting good grades and not fully grasping the concept of their studies.

To remedy this, help them set goals. The best time to do this is at the beginning of the school year or semester. Instead of insisting that they get an “A” in all their subjects, focus on things like making them ask more questions in class or doing more personal studies.

Tip #2: Have a Long-Term Perspective

Parenting and education go hand-in-hand as they are both life-long endeavors. So, please focus on the process of gaining knowledge and its practical application. Have constant conversations with your children about school, find out their strengths, and help them plan for their future careers.

Tip #3: Create a Balance

You may not have noticed this, but children are seriously overscheduled. With families in a constant rush, it pays to slow things down and create a balance for children.

Create a balance for your child by helping them come up with effective routines. Children are more likely to stick to plans they create themselves than one that is imposed on them.

Tip #4: Encourage Good Study Habits

For children, the best time to study is when there is quiet. Multi-tasking is not something they can really do as they are easily distracted. So make sure to eliminate or, at least, reduce any noise to increase concentration and productivity.

Also, try to keep all devices away unless they are a part of the learning materials.

Media consumption isn’t necessarily a bad thing. But learning (or being social) and digital distractions just don’t go very well together…

Tip #5: Keep In Touch With Teachers

One way to enhance your child’s success in school is by constantly communicating with the teachers. Studies have shown that family involvement and positive home-school communication have a higher probability of achieving better grades, a positive attitude towards learning, increased attendance and participation.

So, make it a point to have a meaningful conversation about your child’s progress with teachers, and then together, you can find ways of improving your child’s learning habits.

Tip #6: Keep Them Healthy

When children are not in good health, it hampers a lot of things, including their learning. Learning best occurs when the body and brain are in peak condition. So ensure they eat well, get enough exercise, and sleep well.

Children of school-going age require 9 to 11 hours of sleep every night to be right physically and mentally.
